How the internship actually runs
Every intern is paired with someone senior and given real jobs with a written brief: the
objective, the sources to read, what not to touch, the output we expect, and how we will
know it is finished. That structure is deliberate. Vague instructions are the main reason
junior work goes wrong, so we removed them rather than expecting you to guess. You will
know what done looks like before you start, every time.
In your first fortnight you ship something live. Not a training exercise and not a mock
brief, but a real change on a real system, reviewed by a human before it reaches anyone.
After that the jobs get larger. By month three, interns who have done well have taken
something from an empty folder to a live URL, including the tests that guard it and the
notes that let someone else run it.
How we give feedback
Feedback here is direct, quick, and about the work rather than about you. If something is
wrong you will be told what is wrong and why, usually with the evidence attached: the
measurement, the screenshot, the line in the log. You are expected to push back when you
disagree, with a reason. Some of our best decisions have come from the newest person in
the room saying "that will not work on a phone, here is the screenshot".
We also keep a written record of every mistake we have made and what it taught us. You
will read it early and it is genuinely humbling. It exists so nobody repeats a fault that
has already cost the company a week, and you will add to it too, because you will find new
ways to be wrong. That is expected. The only thing treated seriously here is hiding it.
What we are actually looking for
We look at what you have made, not what you have studied. A rough working project you can
explain honestly beats a strong degree with nothing behind it, in every one of these
roles. There is no qualification filter, no minimum grade, and no requirement to have done
an internship before. We have hired people straight out of school and people changing
career in their thirties.
The trait that predicts success here more than any other is being comfortable finding out
you were wrong. Everything we do is checked against evidence, so being corrected is
routine rather than a failure. People who treat that as useful information improve very
quickly. People who treat it as criticism have a harder time, and we would rather say so
plainly now than have you discover it in month two.
