What happens to your AI system if you cancel?

No lock-in, no traps. Here's what actually happens to your data, website, and automations if you decide to leave your AI agency.

If you cancel an AI system today, you keep your website, your data, your customer list, and your automations. You are not locked in. There is no trap. Any AI agency that makes cancellation difficult, obscures what happens to your data, or requires lengthy contracts is one to avoid entirely.

This question matters because established founders and owners of law firms, accounting practices, property consultancies, and advisory businesses are right to ask it before committing. A client recently asked us: “What if I terminate in three months? What happens to my files?” and “What if prices increase significantly?” These are the real fears that stop smart business owners from upgrading to AI. This guide explains what to look for in any AI agency’s cancellation terms, what The Agency actually does, and why we believe the answer builds trust instead of eroding it.

According to Chris Rowan, founder and CEO of The Agency, “We don’t ask for contracts because we believe the work speaks for itself. If it doesn’t work, you leave. If it does, you stay. That’s how you build a business that earns trust instead of extracting it through lock-in.”

What does cancellation actually mean?

Cancellation is not a single event. It is a handover process with clear stages: stopping payments, deactivating services, exporting data, and transferring ownership. Each stage has a different implication for your business.

Stop-service stage, Your recurring charges end. If you are on a monthly plan, the next billing cycle does not trigger. Immediately. No further invoices.

Deactivation stage, AI agents (like Abby, your 24/7 sales assistant) stop responding to new messages. Your website stays live unless you explicitly ask us to remove it. Your CRM remains intact with all data preserved.

Data-export stage, You receive complete exports of everything: customer contacts, conversations, email sequences, automations, website content. Everything you paid for is yours to take.

Transition stage, If you are moving to a different platform or agency, we document how your systems work and how to redeploy them elsewhere. Your website continues running on your domain. Your email keeps working.

Do you own your website and data?

Yes. This is non-negotiable. You own everything from day one. The moment we build your website, it belongs to you. The moment we set up your CRM, the customer data is yours. This is true whether you stay or leave.

Your website. We build it. You own it. If you cancel, your website stays live. It continues running on your domain with zero disruption. We maintain it only if you pay for the maintenance tier. If you cancel maintenance, you can hire another developer to manage it, or you learn the basics yourself. The code is yours to modify or hand to anyone else.

Your customer data. Captured in your CRM (GHL or another platform), this data is legally and morally yours. We cannot claim ownership. We cannot withhold it. We cannot prevent you from exporting it. We set up your own sub-account in GHL so the data sits in an account only you control. We never store customer data on our own servers.

Your email sequences, landing pages, and automations. Built inside your CRM or on your domain. You own them. You can edit them, pause them, delete them, or hand them to another agency. They are not encrypted or restricted. They are plain-text workflows you can read and understand.

Your AI agent’s training and voice. The system prompt (the “brain” we build for Abby or your sales AI) is stored in your n8n account or GHL account, both of which you own. If you leave, you can extract it and redeploy it on another platform, or keep it on file as documentation of what your AI voice sounds like.

What happens to your AI agents and automations?

Your 24/7 sales agent (Abby) stops responding to new messages on the day your service ends. That is the only disruption. Everything else stays intact and can be handed off.

The agent itself. If Abby is running on n8n, she lives in YOUR n8n account, which we configure but you control. When you cancel, you have three options: (1) keep the account active and keep Abby running (you just stop paying us for management), (2) export the workflow and redeploy it on another platform, or (3) delete it entirely. We do not delete it for you unless you ask. You keep the code.

The integrations. Abby connects to your CRM, email, SMS, and website. When you cancel, we deactivate her specifically. The CRM stays intact. The email integrations stay intact. Your website keeps working. If you want Abby to keep running on a different platform, the integrations are already documented so you can reconnect them in minutes.

The automations. If we set up email sequences, appointment reminders, review requests, or lead-capture workflows in your GHL account (your own sub-account, not a shared one), these stay active even after we leave. You can keep running them, pause them, edit them, or delete them. They are yours. The only services we stop are the ones we actively manage (sending data, triggering custom logic, or monitoring performance). The automated workflows you own continue running in your account.

Conversations and chat history. Any conversations Abby had with your leads are stored in your CRM or chat system. You keep them. You can export them, analyse them, train a new AI agent with them, or archive them for legal/compliance purposes.

What about your customer list?

Your customer list is yours entirely. Every contact, conversation history, deal value, and lead source belongs to you from day one.

You captured these leads because your website, your AI system, your outreach, and your brand brought them in. We built the infrastructure. We never own the results.

If you leave, the list stays. You can export it in bulk (CSV, JSON, whatever format you need). You can import it into another CRM, another email platform, or another agency’s system. You can use it to fuel your own campaigns. You can share it with your sales team. It is your asset.

If we generated leads FOR you (through outbound outreach, Instagram scraping, or data enrichment), those leads are yours. The data itself came from public sources. We added value by finding and verifying it. You now own the list and can use it however you want.

Pricing increases and contract protection

Here is where many AI agencies trap owners. They offer cheap pricing upfront, build lock-in contracts, then increase prices 18 months later when you have invested time and depend on the system. By then, switching costs more than the price increase.

The Agency does not do this. Here is our commitment:

No long-term contracts. You are on month-to-month terms by default. No 12-month commitments. No auto-renewal clauses. You know the price, the service, and the commitment period upfront.

Terms are negotiable and in writing. If you want a written agreement specifying exactly what you get, what it costs, and what happens if prices change, we write it. We do not hide terms in fine print.

Price increases are transparent. If we increase prices in the future, we give you 30 days’ notice. You can cancel at that notice point with no penalty. You can accept the new terms, or you can walk. Your choice. For our current pricing structure, see our pricing page.

You see the value before you pay. We build most of your system, show you a live preview, and only charge you once you confirm it works. If you don’t like it, you walk away with zero cost. This removes the risk entirely from your side.

Questions to ask ANY AI agency before signing

QuestionWhy it mattersRed flag answer
What happens to my website if I cancel?Your site is your most expensive asset”We remove it” or “It disappears after 30 days”
Do I own my customer data? This is the foundation of your business”We hold it in escrow” or “It’s encrypted so you can’t export it”
What is your cancellation notice period? The longer the period, the harder it is to leave”60 days” or “90 days” without flexibility
Do you require a long-term contract?Lock-in prevents you from leaving”Yes, 12 months minimum” or “18-month commitment”
Can I move my data to another platform?Portability is your escape hatch”The format is proprietary” or “Export is not available”
What is your pricing transparency?Hidden costs trap you later”Pricing is custom, we’ll discuss in a call”
If you shut down, what happens to my system?Business continuity mattersEvasive answer or “We’ll handle it” with no specifics
Can I redeploy your AI agents elsewhere?Your agent is an asset, not a subscription”The code is ours and you cannot move it”
Are there early termination fees?Penalties lock you in beyond the contract”Yes, if you cancel before 6 months”

If an agency answers “yes” to three or more red flags, walk. There are better options.

The real reason we don’t lock you in

We believe that if we have to lock you in with long contracts and hidden data ownership, our work is not good enough. We would rather earn your trust by proving the system works, and keep earning it by making you easy to leave and hard to abandon.

This is business confidence. It is the opposite of desperation.

When you know you can cancel anytime, you stop negotiating defensively and start actually testing whether the system works for your firm. You become a better partner. You ask for improvements instead of planning your exit. You recommend us to other founders instead of warning them away.

The founders who stay with us do not stay because of contracts. They stay because the system delivers more leads, faster response times, and higher conversion rates. They stay because their firm runs better. They stay because the value exceeds the cost.

And the ones who do not see value? We make it easy for them to leave, because a bad fit traps both of us.

How The Agency handles cancellation in practice

Month 1 to 30: You are building and testing the system. You have full access to everything. You know what you are paying for and how it works.

If you want to cancel after Month 1: Send notice (email, message, call). Your final bill covers the usage to date. Your system stays live. We hand over all code, credentials, and data. We document how everything works.

If you want to stay: Your recurring charge continues on the same terms. No surprise increases until you explicitly agree to them.

If your business changes and you need to pause temporarily: We can pause your subscription (not cancel it) and resume later. No penalties. Many founders do this during low seasons or while repositioning their firm.

If you want to upgrade instead of cancel: The new tier takes effect immediately, with no termination fee for the old service. You are never double-charged.

This is how we build a partnership instead of extracting value.

Frequently asked questions

Do I own my website and data after cancelling? Yes. Your website stays live, your data exports completely, and your custom AI systems transfer or shut down cleanly. You own everything we build.

What happens to my AI agent and automations? The agent stops responding, but the connections to your CRM and email remain in place. You can redeploy the agent elsewhere or delete it entirely. No data loss.
